Indian Shores Campground will be open to the public Saturday, Sept. 6 for a fundraiser named “Honor Your Military Fun Day.”
The campground’s Jerry Giebel, whose father and brother were at one time members of the U.S. armed forces, said he’s always had “a lot of respect for the military.
“We’re opening up the campground here for veterans and their families to come in and take the kids swimming in the pool, play mini-golf, play horseshoes or tennis,” he said. “We’ll have pontoon boat tours around the lake.”
While admission to the campground that day will be free, there will be a charge for activities, the proceeds from that as well as from the sale of food that day and a portion of camping fees from weekend campers going to Camp American Legion and the Honor Flight program.
Giebel said he sat down earlier this year with leaders of veterans groups in Minocqua, Woodruff and Rhinelander.
“I wanted to put together a fundraiser for veterans no matter what branch they were in or what war they were in and those who served between wars,” he said. “I wanted to raise money for them.”
In addition to the other activities and food, there will be raffles.
“We’re giving a percentage of what we make in the bar to Camp American Legion and the Honor Flight,” Giebel said. “Anything we raise from the raffles will go to those organizations, too.”
The event begins that day at 10 a.m. and will go until 7 p.m.
