Air National Guard unit returns to Camp American Legion
In the fall of 2014, personnel with the civil engineering squadron of the Wisconsin Air National Guard's 128th Air Refueling Wing did their annual training at Camp American Legion, completely rebuilding, from the ground up, one of the camp's cabins that had belonged to the American Legion post in King. Nicolet College selects 2016-17 student ambassadors
Nicolet College has named Sammi Zalewski and Anna Gane as student ambassadors for the 2016-17 academic year.

"Being named a Nicolet student ambassador is one of the highest honors the college gives a student," said Nicolet director of student success Christin Van Kauwenberg. "Both of the students selected are very deserving and I'm sure will do a great job representing Nicolet."

Cub Scout Pack 564 will be holding a bake sale at Torpy Park the day of Beef-A-Rama, Saturday, Sept. 24 at Torpy Park.

Model Train Show and swap meet Sept. 24 and 25
The Northwoods Model Railroad Club is sponsoring the 9th annual Model Train Show and swap meet from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 24, and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 25 at the new Hazelhurst Town Hall 4.5 miles south of Minocqua on Highway 51. Free parking is available.

Admission is $4 for adults, children 12 and under are free when accompanied by an adult. Operating layouts and food and drinks will be available.

Beta Sigma Phi Wisconsin Chapter Convention held this weekend at Lake of the Torches
Beta Sigma Phi, an international sorority, will hold its Wisconsin Chapter Convention the weekend of Sept. 23-25 at Lake of the Torches Resort and Casino. Presenters include Nicole Nowlin, Master Sommelier, from the Black First Inn of Three Lakes as well as Jeff Igel, director of Culinary Arts - Fox Valley Technical, Appleton. Sponsorship is provided by The Wisconsin Beef Council.

The sorority promotes learning, friendship and service. Epsilon Gamma, the Minocqua area chapter, is hosting the event which is open to members only.

Artists sought for regional show
The Lakeland Art League is seeking entries for the annual Wisconsin Regional Art Program Exhibit, Oct. 3 through Nov. 5, held at The Town of Minocqua Library, 415 Menominee, Minocqua. Deadline for entries is Sept. 24. with artwork due from 9 to 11 a.m. on Oct. 1, at the Town of Minocqua Library. Participation in this exhibit is open to all non-professional artists 16 years of age and up. All work must be original in concept and design and done by the person signing it. Entries must have been completed within the last two years in any media.

Volunteer driver shortage in the Lakeland Area
Volunteer drivers are needed in the Woodruff/Minocqua/Hazelhurst area for the Oneida County Dept. on Aging. Escort drivers are needed for taking people to medical appointments, and Meals on Wheels (MOW) drivers are needed to deliver mid-day meals to shut-in seniors. Mileage allowance for both MOW routes and Escort trips can be paid at the current rate of 54 cents per mile.

Applications are now being accepted for the Innovative Educator Grant program sponsored by Wisconsin Public Service Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Wisconsin Public Service (WPS). The Innovative Educator Grant is an opportunity for 6-12 grade educators in WPS service area to receive grants up to $1,000 for new projects with an academic focus and goals to improve student achievement in the areas of science, technology, engineering or math (STEM).
