Never Forgotten Honor Flight an emotional experience
The Never Forgotten Honor Flight is the Wausau hub of the national Honor Flight program. The organization is dedicated to providing a flight for veterans of World War II, Vietnam and Korea to travel to Washington, D.C. and see the memorials and monuments constructed in their honor.

The flight is entirely free for veterans and in April of this year, Phillip Strand of Minocqua was able to experience the flight. (subscriber access)

An art-full summer at LOLA
From 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 30, Land O' Lakes Arts (LOLA) welcomes guitarist Steve Kickert for Porch Songs on the LOLA Deck. Kickert, a resident of Land O' Lakes, recently retired from the forest service and now concentrates on his music. He entertains at local nursing homes and has been involved in open-mic nights and local jam sessions. Bring your outdoor chair and enjoy listening to Steve as he plays finger-style acoustic guitar. This is a free event open to all.

Two day music festival in Phelps this weekend
The 2016 Twin Lakes Music Festival will take place on the shores of North Twin Lake in downtown Phelps this weekend with two days of music, food, drinks and fun. Starting Friday, June 24, the event will held at the lakefront bandstand located on Hwy. 17 in downtown Phelps. It will serve as a fundraising event to benefit Phelps Youth Sports and Recreation.

Event organizer Carol Molter said with beautiful weather forecasted she hopes the event will be a big success.

Lando Center hosting nutrition and cooking demonstrations
The Lando Center introduces Casei Reidy, resident nutrition expert. Reidy is a dietetics student from UW-Stevens Point and will be graduating with her bachelor's degree in December. Reidy grew up in Land O' Lakes and also joins the Lando Center staff to offer personal training sessions and orientations for new members.

The Town of St. Germain is pleased to announce our annual Independence Day Celebration is all set for Sunday, July 3 in the St. Germain Community Park. Start the day off running at the 12th Annual Freedom 5K. Registration is at 7:30 a.m. and the race starts at 8:30 a.m. The Kids 1K begins at 9:30 a.m. All proceeds from the Freedom 5K will be used for the development and maintenance of non-motorized recreational trails in St. Germain.

Author James Bradley to visit Northwoods Discovery Center
For the second year in a row the Friends of the Koller Library have found a New York Times Bestselling author to come to the Northwoods and give a talk. Author James Bradley will visit the Northwoods Discovery Center in Manitowish Waters from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, June 30. Bradley's father, John Bradley, was one of the flag raisers on the island of Iwo Jima during WWII.

Volunteer driver shortage in the Lakeland Area
Volunteer drivers are needed in the Woodruff/Minocqua/Hazelhurst area for the Oneida County Dept. on Aging. There is a specific shortage for Escort Drivers on Thursdays taking people to medical appointments, and the Meals on Wheels (MOW) program out of Holy Family Church needs more drivers to deliver meals to shut-in seniors.

Minocqua Island Swim Challenge returns on June 25
There's still time to register for the 2016 Minocqua Island Swim Challenge. On Saturday, June 25, 2016 over 150 swimmers will compete in the one mile or 400 yard open water swim challenge at Torpy Park, in downtown Minocqua. The event is presented by Ministry Health Care, Camp Agawak and Boyd Financial Services, LLC and is organized by the Minocqua Area Chamber of Commerce and the Oneida County Public Safety Dive Team.

Hazelhurst Lions Club celebrate 50 years
On Thursday, May 19 the Hazelhurst Lions Club, who this year celebrate their 50th anniversary, held their 2015-16 officer's installation dinner at the Norwood Pines Supper Club. In addition to installing the incoming officers, a new member Sharon Goetsch was officially welcomed and inducted into the Hazelhurst Lions Club.

'I owe it all to the Air Force'
It took some time, but Richard Skroski of Lake Tomahawk, one of the veterans on the 23rd Never Forgotten Honor Flight in April, is a "Northwoods transplant."

He was born and raised in Milwaukee and graduated high school there in 1962.

After that it was Milwaukee technical college and marriage in 1965 to his wife, Judith, or Judy. (subscriber access)
