This summer, Lakeland area children ages seven to 11 will have the opportunity to slow down, unplug from technology and attend Grow Your Spirit Creative Arts Camp. The camp will run from 9 to 11:30 a.m. July 24 to 28.

Grow Your Spirit is the brainchild of five local women artists who want to give kids a chance to explore their creativity.

Retired Arbor Vitae-Woodruff art teacher Toni Polfus is a leading force behind the camp.

"The experience is designed to help kids reflect on who they are inside and out and express their spirit through art," she said.

Participants will experience different art forms, including storytelling, pottery making, collage assemblage, dream catcher creation, card stamping, singing and line dancing, all revolving around the theme of self-exploration. Each day of camp will center around a different activity.

Healthy snacks will be provided.

Participants will benefit from the artists' impressive credentials and years of experience.

Potter and painter Toni Polfus holds a master of fine arts degree. Fiber artist Jana Mirs holds a master of fine arts degree, as well as a substitute teacher certificate. Visual artist Judi Maloney holds a bachelor of fine arts degree and sells her unique creations at local art galleries. Retired dentist Dr. Patty Buehler is a well-known performer in local choral groups, most notably Trillium. Vocalist Connie Lefebvre brings years of experience working with children in the Lac du Flambeau School District after school program.

While the camp gives kids time to reflect, Buehler said, "mainly, we want them to have fun."

The camp will take place at Northwoods Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 8625 Peggy's Lane in Woodruff.

"It's a wonderful sanctuary in the woods, one that other community groups like Nicolet College use for its classes," Mirs said of the fellowship.

The camp is free to participants. All materials will be provided. Registration deadline is July 18. Enrollment is limited, so parents are encouraged to sign up as soon as possible.

For further information and to register, contact Toni Polfus at skipols@newnorth.net or 715-277-2025, or Jana Mirs at janamirs@yahoo.com or 715-356-4746.
