Minocqua hosts 16th annual Journey's Convention

The 16th annual Journey’s Convention was held June 8 through 11 at The Pointe in Minocqua. More than 700 attended the convention, with a common desire to stay clean of narcotics.

For the 16th straight year, Minocqua has played host to the Journey's Convention. The four-day event sees workshops, outdoor activities and live entertainment for those currently in the Narcotics Anonymous program. (subscriber access)

Benefit to put resident back on feet after Presque Isle house fire
On Monday, June 19, a Presque Isle house owned by Al Euschenbauch and rented by Dan Schmidt, caught fire and burned to the ground. All of Schmidt's belongings in the house - furniture, clothing, photographs and other valuable possessions - were destroyed. It was a situation most people can only imagine happening to them.

Green reflective fire address signs
It is mandatory all property owners (even those only here for the season) in the town of Arbor Vitae need to have the green reflective fire address signs put up on their property. This is a Vilas County ordinance. If you do not have yours already installed, please call the town at 715-356-3120 and they will have one made for you. Town Offices are open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The sign and the post to put it on cost $20.

Fleazaar donations
The Manitowish Waters Presbyterian Church will only accept donations for the annual Fleazaar on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon through July 8. Call Jay at 715-686-6173 or the church office at 715-543-2998. The sale is Wednesday, July 19.

Town Lakes Committee
An organizational meeting of the town of Boulder Junction's Town Lakes Committee will be Saturday, July 8, 10 a.m., in the Nordlof Conference Room at the community center. The committee is inviting all Boulder Junction residents, permanent or seasonal, who are interested in lakes, whether or not part of the seven lakes associations. LOLA welcomes singer-songwriter Jon Troast to the LOLA Porch from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 28. Troast's performance will kick off LOLA's free summer music series, Porch Songs. Porch Songs will include performances by local musicians, featuring a variety of musical styles.

Music on Main Street continues June 28

Educational quilting event in Wausau on Oct. 14
Quilt College, a day intended to expose, educate and inspire those attending, will be held in Wausau at Northcentral Technical College on Saturday, Oct. 14. This is the first year in what will hopefully become an annual event.

Tuesday July 4: The Star Spangled Jubilee starts at noon on Main Street with American Legion Post 451 gun salute at Veterans Memorial Triangle, followed by singing of the national anthem. Parade floats line up before 11:30 a.m. on Ada Street. Barb Boston will DJ at the airport starting at 7:30 p.m. with an interactive dance party at 8:30 p.m. Fireworks will be lit at airport at dusk.

Free airplane rides for kids July 1
Chapter 640 of the EAA (Experimental Aircraft Association out of Oshkosh) will be offering free airplane rides for kids ages 8-17 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 1, at the Manitowish Waters Airport, weather permitting.

These rides are part of the ongoing Young Eagles Program, which began in 1992.

Callie Bates at North Lakeland Discovery Center on June 27
The North Lakeland Discovery Center in Manitowish Waters hosts Callie Bates from 5 to 8 p.m. on June 27 for the release of "The Waking Land." As part of the 2017 Northwoods Book Festival, there will be live music, a book signing and books available for purchase. White pine seedlings will be given away as party favors to the first 100 guests. The party is an open house, with some brief remarks around 6 p.m.

Agent Orange is the name given to a blend of herbicides the U.S. military sprayed from 1961 to 1971 to remove plants and leaves from foliage in Vietnam that provided enemy cover. Agent Orange itself is not a disability and cannot be claimed as one, but it can cause disabilities.

Run for a Vet Race on July 4 in Mercer
The July 4 Run for a Vet Race in Mercer will begin at the MECCA Trail Cabin at 8 a.m. Doors open at 7 a.m. There are two races, a 5.1-K run or 1.1-mile walk/run. Divisions for the 5.1-K run only are for the top male and female overall, and a top male and female from each age category.

Bob Weis launches new book with upcoming signings
Author Bob Weis has released his new book "How to Survive a Vacation; Hating Fishing, Swimming and Snakes ... And Loving Every Minute of It!" The book is available at Moondeer and Friends and Amazon. After 55 years, he returned to the area where his family vacationed for more than 40 years: northern Wisconsin.

"People often say, 'You can never go back.' I wanted to see if they were right," Weis said.

Paws in the Park event fetches success
Travel with pets has increased dramatically in the past couple of years and the Minocqua area, not wanting to be left behind, strove to create a pet-friendly event to drive tourism and community engagement, and the Minocqua Area Chamber of Commerce created Paws in the Park. Paws in the Park is a pet-friendly event which took place June 17 and 18 at Minocqua's Torpy Park and allowed humans and dogs alike to socialize and compete. (subscriber access)
