Local. Public. Radio. Chances are if you live in the Northwoods, or are a regular visitor, you've heard one of the many hosts utter that phrase on the Rhinelander-based station. For nearly 34 years, WXPR has given a voice to Northern Wisconsin and Michigan's U.P., but proposed funding cuts say that voice can stand to be diminished. (subscriber access)

Cupcakes for a cause
Pharmacist Jen Hansen holds up one of her homemade Devils Food with monster cookie dough frosting cupcakes on "Cupcake Wednesday," April 19, at the St. Germain Pharmacy in downtown St. Germain. Hansen holds Cupcake Wednesday every Wednesday in April as a way to increase autism awareness and as a way to give back to an organization that has been beneficial to her own sons, donations benefit the Lakeland Area Special Olympics.

Kiwanis SOTM
On Tuesday, April 18, the Lakeland Area Kiwanis Club honored two deserving students with their Student of the Month Award at the breakfast meeting. Try out for Denim & Dessert Theatre on April 26
Denim & Dessert, the Presque Isle based reader's theatre group, has announced tryouts for its spring production, the female version of "The Odd Couple." Neil Simon has written a female version of his uproariously funny co-habiting male roommates. Instead of Felix and Oscar (Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon) think Florence and Olive, two mis-matched temporary roommates who work, marry and lust after the Spanish brothers who live in the apartment above. This zany twosome is joined by four female friends who play Trivial Pursuit and share mayhem with the "Odd Couple."

Marshfield Clinic offers free community CPR session May 6 in Park Falls
Marshfield Clinic Park Falls Center is offering a free community CPR session 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday, May 6, at Park Falls Public Library, 121 N. Fourth Ave.

"We are offering these free sessions in honor of Sue Teichmiller's recent health struggle," said Jenny Dodge, physician assistant, friend and co-worker of Teichmiller's at Marshfield Clinic. "Her life was initially saved by her husband and a family friend doing CPR until the ambulance arrived. We feel it's vitally important to spread the knowledge of how to perform CPR to make it more widely-known in our community."

A Learn to Quilt class will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays, May 13 and 20 at the Hiawatha Clubhouse in Woodruff. The Ladies of the Lakes Quilt Guild will be quilting baby or small quilts in just two days. Learn all the steps and return home with a finished quilt.

Father Daughter Dance held April 28
All area fathers and grandfathers with daughters and granddaughters are invited to the 9th annual Father Daughter dance hosted by Eaglebrook Church in Woodruff. This year's theme is "Saddle Up for a Country Western Hoedown." The dance will take place from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Friday, April 28 at the Arbor Vitae Town Hall on 10675 Big Arbor Vitae Dr. Those attending are encouraged to come in their favorite country and western outfits.

Oneida County Fair will start pallet recycling contest this year
New this summer at the Oneida County Fair will be a pallet recycling contest. Local individuals or groups are invited to bring projects for indoor or outdoor use that are made from recycled pallets. Each exhibit will be displayed in or around the Exhibit Court area during the Fair's duration. Gift certificates and other prizes donated from area businesses will be awarded for first through third place in these four categories: article made for gardening, article made for outdoor use, article made for indoor use, and display or poster of pallet use.
