Helen B. Vonachen

Helen B. Vonachen, 94, passed away Aug. 10, 2013, at Proctor Endowment Home in Peoria.

Born in Peoria, Ill., Dec. 12, 1918, the daughter of Dr. Harry and Josephine (Walsh) Brown, she lived her early years in Tiskilwa, Ill.  

She married J. Robert Vonachen Feb. 4, 1938, in St. Louis, Mo. He preceded her in death Aug. 4, 2002.

Helen was also preceded in death by her brother, Dr. Robert Brown, and her granddaughter, Cory Davidson.

She is survived by two sons, Jay R. (Betty) Vonachen and S. Rudy (Carol) Vonachen, both of Peoria; three daughters, Susan (Bill) Davidson of Davenport, Iowa, Cassie (Michael) Schmidt of Wheaton, Ill., and Amy Vonachen Poparad of Peoria. Helen has two living sisters, Eleanor Roll of Southern Pines, N.C., and Janet (Dr. Lewis) Annunziato of New Canaan, Conn. 

A dozen grandchildren have wonderful loving and fun memories of Helen and Bob at their Minocqua cottage.  They are Matt (Lesley) Vonachen, Liz Vonachen Assalley, Molly (Mike) Miller, Chad (Jennifer) Vonachen, Tad (Kathy) Vonachen, Katy Vonachen, Todd (Grace) Davidson, Cam (Mary) Davidson, Matthew Schmidt, Molly Schmidt, Katie Schmidt, and Greg Poparad. She was also blessed with 16 great-grandchildren.

Helen graduated from Tiskilwa High School and attended the University of Illinois, Champaign. She later studied to be a lab technician at OSF St. Francis Medical Center. She was a homemaker at heart and enjoyed cooking. Helen loved the Northwoods at her home in Minocqua. Many remember that she found time to be a good and thoughtful listener.  

The family would like to thank all of her caregivers at Proctor Home for their kindnesses and wonderful care during Helen’s time there.

Family members will celebrate her life with a Mass Wednesday, Aug. 14, 11 a.m., at St. Thomas Catholic Church, Peoria Heights, Ill.  

Msgr. William Watson will officiate.  

They will greet friends at the church one hour prior to the Mass. 

Entombment will be in Resurrection Mausoleum.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Children’s Hospital of Illinois, Sun Foundation, 1276 Sun Road, Washburn, Ill., 61570, St. Thomas Parish Building Fund, or the donor’s favorite charity.
