Gloria M Benedict, 85, passed away on Oct. 30, 2013, at Avanti Health and Rehabilitation Center. Gloria was born at home Nov. 11, 1927, in Griffith, Ind. She was one of 12 children and dearly enjoyed her early childhood years on the family farm. Her parents, Moses and Pauline Benedict, were one of the founding families of the town of Griffith.
When Gloria was 14 years old she went to live with the Sisters at St. Anne’s Home in Hammond, Ind., so she could attend high school in town. She graduated from Hammond High in 1945. She then attended St. Vincent’s Nursing College where she became a nurse. She spent her career in many different aspects of nursing in the Chicago and northern Indiana area. The last 20 years of her career she worked for the state of Indiana inspecting hospitals and nursing homes with her “crew of five.”
She retired to Buckskin Lake in Minocqua in 1984 with her dear lifelong friends, Margie Vine and Helen Topper. She enjoyed her retirement years spending time fishing, snowmobiling, making firewood, gardening, bird-watching and enjoying friendships with her neighbors. In her younger days she liked to motorcycle and was a member of the Civil Air Patrol. Gloria was preceded in death by her parents, several brothers and sisters, nieces and nephews, neighbors and friends.
She is survived by her sister, Eve, in Ohio; her sister, Pauline and her brother, John, both from Indiana and their families; her niece, Shirley Ackerman, and her husband, Van Ackerman; great-niece Kathleen Ackerman; and great-nephew Christopher Ackerman. She is also survived by her adopted family and caregiver, Rebecca Olson.
Private graveside services were held and she is buried in the Town of Grant Cemetery near Neillsville, next to Margie and Helen. On behalf of Gloria, her family would like to thank the kind caretakers and nurses at Avanti Health and Rehabilitation Center and Dr. Linda Seale.
