Laurie A. Matushak, 55, of Hazelhurst, went to Heaven Nov. 10, 2013, 2:07 a.m., at her home after a courageous battle with cancer.

Her strength and determination amazed and inspired us all.

Laurie was born April 11, 1958, in Wausau, the daughter of Gerald and Sally (Frazier) Rainville. She graduated from Wausau East High School.

Laurie married Jim Matushak Sept. 4, 1976. They raised their children, Jason and Jesse, in Hazelhurst where they lived for 34 years.

Laurie was always active in the community. She was an honorary Hazelhurst Fire Department member and always willing to lend a helping hand.

Laurie was employed by the Hagge family for 33 years; where they became an important part of her life and family.  For the past 20 years she loved to drive school bus for the Lakeland Bus Service.  She was proud to drive school bus and loved the kids and the smile she put on their faces. She drove for many children and their children in the future.

Laurie’s children and grandchildren will always have a special place in her heart. She enjoyed all the time she got to spend with them. She was the best mom and nana in the world.

So much love, laughter, and memories surrounded her family and friends. She enjoyed hunting with her family, loved playing cards, snowmobiling, jeep rides and four-wheeling. Her time spent up north with her husband also made fun times and friends. Her passion to garden brought life to all she touched.

Laurie’s smile, humor and unique red hair will be missed by all.

She is survived by her husband, Jim; her two sons, Jason (Abeer) and Jesse; and five grandchildren, Patrick, Christian, Maura, Layla and Alex. She is further survived by her siblings, Jerry (Sandy) Rainville and Cindy (Mike) Hughes; and by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Gerald and Sally Rainville; and one sister, Carol Rainville.

A memorial gathering will be held Saturday, Nov. 16, at Nimsgern Funeral Home Chapel in Woodruff, noon-2:30 p.m. A memorial service will follow at 2:30 p.m., with a reception to follow.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Matushak family

Online condolences may be shared at www.nimsgernfuneral.com.
