Following Election Day, state and national media reported long wait times at the polls and even some voters who were turned away by new voter I.D. laws in some parts of the state.

Cruz, Sanders romp in Wisconsin wins
Republican Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas and Democratic Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont scored lopsided wins in their respective Wisconsin presidential primaries Tuesday, putting the frontrunners of both parties in vulnerable positions heading down the stretch of the nomination race.

In the state's Supreme Court race, justice Rebecca Bradley repelled a challenge by appeals court judge JoAnne Kloppenburg to win a full 10-year term on the bench. Gov. Scott Walker had appointed Bradley to the court last year after justice Patrick Crooks died. (subscriber access)

Regional incumbents have rough night at polls
Wisconsin voters turned out in the highest numbers in decades for the presidential primary and local elections on Tuesday. Change was big theme in this year's election. In the five contested races for the Vilas County Board in 2016, the incumbents lost three. Add to that three new faces for seats on the board where people ran unopposed, and the result is eight changes on a county board with 21 seats. Incumbents were also defeated in two of the three contested races for the Oneida County Board.

Field of candidates for area Spring General Election nearly final
An incumbent school board member on both the Arbor Vitae-Woodruff and Minocqua, Hazelhurst and Lake Tomahawk boards of education failed to file declaration of non-candidacy or nomination papers by the state’s Jan. 2 deadline so both school districts decided to extend the deadline for accepting completed nomination papers until 5 p.m. Monday, Jan. 7.

Turnout in the Northwoods 'heavy' as of the noon hour

A number of hotly-contested election races are apparently driving voters to the polls today across the nation and in Wisconsin’s Northwoods.

Area election clerks and town officials reported as of shortly before 1 p.m. today voter turnout was heavy and in some cases the number of absentee ballots being cast were nearly twice the usual number.

Minocqua Town Clerk Roben Haggart reported shortly before 1 p.m. the town had already had 1,389 people cast their ballots.
