A number of hotly-contested election races are apparently driving voters to the polls today across the nation and in Wisconsin’s Northwoods.

Area election clerks and town officials reported as of shortly before 1 p.m. today voter turnout was heavy and in some cases the number of absentee ballots being cast were nearly twice the usual number.

Minocqua Town Clerk Roben Haggart reported shortly before 1 p.m. the town had already had 1,389 people cast their ballots.

“We also have 1,000 absentee ballots which is about twice what we would normally have,” Haggart said. “We’ve also registered about 100 new voters at the polls today, too.”

Woodruff Town Clerk Kim Albano said voter turnout was also heavy so far today in her town. As of 12:45 p.m., 873 town residents had cast their votes. The town also had about 315 people vote by absentee ballot.

“That’s pretty high, too. We normally have about 120 people vote by absentee,” Albano said.

The town of Arbor Vitae also reported a heavy voter turnout. By shortly before1 p.m. 770 people had walked in and cast their ballots. The town had 692 absentee ballots and 53 people cast their votes in the first four minutes after the polls were opened.

All the clerks said they expect a heavy surge of voters to head to the polls after the dinner hour tonight.
