Breaking news: Former middle school teacher convicted of possession of child pornography
Sentencing set for Jan. 2

Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen announced this afternoon that Michael Wang, 47, of Florence, was convicted today in Vilas County Circuit Court of two counts of possession of child pornography.

Judge Neal Nielsen accepted his guilty pleas and set the case for sentencing on Jan. 2, at 1:30 p.m. Eight additional counts of child pornography were dismissed as part of the plea but will be considered at sentencing along with numerous other uncharged counts.

Wang is a former middle school math teacher for the Northland Pines School District. While using a school-issued laptop computer, Wang began engaging in online, inappropriate sexual chatting, at times with minor females. Investigators believe one of the people with whom he had regular sexual chats, oftentimes in his classroom at the school, was a 13- to 14-year-old girl from another state.  Monitoring software installed on the school computers alerted school officials to the inappropriate chatting.

While investigating the sex chats, school officials discovered two digital flash drives in a filing cabinet in Wang’s classroom. Those two flash drives were found to contain more than 100 pictures and videos of child pornography. Some of the pictures and videos depicted children as young as 4 to 5 years old engaged in sexual acts with adults. Wang also had regular family photographs on one of the same flash drives.

Each count carries a maximum penalty of 25 years imprisonment, a $100,000 fine, and a mandatory $500 child pornography surcharge.

The state is represented by Assistant Attorney General David Maas, acting as special prosecutor for Vilas County. The case was investigated by the Vilas County Sheriff’s Office with assistance from the Oneida County Sheriff’s Department forensic unit.
