Oneida County Sheriff Jeff Hoffman announced Monday, Nov. 12, that after 38 years of service, he will retire as sheriff of Oneida County, effective Dec. 14.

Hoffman started his law enforcement career in December 1974. He was appointed as sheriff in 2005, and was elected twice.

He is currently serving a term of office that ends in January 2015.

Hoffman said, “It has been a privilege and an honor to serve the citizens for 38 years. Oneida County has had a tradition of strong law enforcement and providing good service to our citizens. I was very privileged during my career to have been mentored by four sheriffs – Jack Phillips, Penny Drivas, Charlie Crofoot, and Tim Miller. I also had the opportunity to work with and learn from many other law enforcement professionals such as Chief Deputy George Doucette, Chief Deputy Robert Conquest, Chief Deputy Jack Bergman, Capt. Ray Zastrow, Lt. John Boyer, Lt. Tom Hageny, and many other sergeants and investigators and other law enforcement professionals.

“Just like these fine officers, I hope I left my mark on the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office and I trust those now in leadership roles will continue the strong heritage of professionalism and integrity. I am proud of the current staff and their abilities. I am very confident that this will be a smooth transition and all members of my office will step up and continue to provide the people of Oneida County with the high standards of public safety service that they are accustomed to. I look forward to spending some time with my family and moving on to the next chapter of my life.”

Pursuant to state law, Hoffman has notified the county clerk of his retirement and resignation date. The county clerk will notify the governor’s office of the vacancy. Chief deputy John Sweeney will perform all required duties of the sheriff, pending an appointment by Gov. Scott Walker to fill the vacancy.

Sweeney said, “Sheriff Jeff Hoffman has demonstrated exceptional leadership in the sheriff’s office and he will be truly missed. His strong sense of fairness and deep caring and compassion for the employees and people of the county are traits and genuine character that we have all learned from and we will cherish those memories. Jeff’s knowledge of the public safety business and the commitment to Oneida County has allowed our county to remain very safe and the employees of the sheriff’s office hope that Jeff can now enjoy a very long and healthy retirement – he has certainly earned it.”
