With the recent snowfall in the area, snowmobilers have got to be getting the itch to get on their sleds and get on the trails.

They will have to wait a little longer.

In Oneida County, trails for all-terrain-vehicles are open through the end of November and there are no plans to open snowmobile trails there until Dec. 15.

If conditions are right in Vilas County, they may open a few days sooner than that.

“We plan on noon Dec. 10 to open, conditions permitting,” Dale Mayo, Vilas County’s trail safety coordinator, said. “We would not open any sooner.”

Mayo said the decision not to open sooner than the tenth, regardless of whether or not there’s enough snowfall, is one that was made by members of the Vilas County Snowmobile Alliance, which is made up of the 11 clubs in Vilas County.

“We are currently doing inspections but out of respect for private landowners, we work around their schedule,” he said. “Some of these landowners are currently hunting on their property.”

The 10-day muzzleloader hunting season started Nov. 26 and runs until Wednesday, Dec. 5.

The four-day antlerless season runs from Thursday, Dec. 6 through Sunday Dec. 9.
