Candidates in the upcoming spring local elections were allowed to begin circulating their nomination papers as of Dec. 1.
Those completed papers must be returned to the county clerk’s office or the office of a local town clerk by 5 p.m. Jan. 2.
Incumbents who choose not to run again for re-election must file their declaration of noncandidacy by 5 p.m. Dec. 21.
Officials place an earlier deadline for filing noncandidacy papers so there is sufficient time for others to consider running for a local post before the Jan. 2 deadline.
The spring is when most town governments or other local governments, including local boards of education, hold elections.
