Oneida County 911 system temporarily disrupted last month
Officials could still answer emergency calls

Equipment in Oneida County’s 911 center stopped working for about an hour in January, prompting the use of a back-up system, officials disclosed Monday.

County Emergency Management Director Ken Kortenhof said dispatchers were still able to receive calls through different phone lines.

“We still had the ability to answer 911 calls,” Kortenhof said. “That never went down.”

According to Lynn Grube, director of the county’s information technology department, the disruption was limited to just the digital portion of the 911 system. A computer card that feeds phone extensions into the system crashed, she said.

Kortenhof said he believed the county’s 911 system has had similar disruptions before, but he said he could not recall any during his tenure.

The incident occurred Sunday, Jan. 26, according to Kortenhof and Grube.

Had the entire 911 center crashed, calls could have been routed to Vilas County’s 911 center or a dispatcher in Minocqua.

Oneida County is in the process of upgrading its 911 system.
