Rate hike proposed in Lakeland area for water, sewer
Public hearing set for Feb. 24

Water and sewer rates in Minocqua, Woodruff and Arbor Vitae are set to rise this spring.

The Lakeland Sanitary District is proposing to increase water rates by 3 percent and sewer rates by 4 percent, according to Ron Groth, superintendent of the district.

Groth said the reason for the rate increases is to cover ever-growing operating expenses.

“It’s basically normal inflationary costs,” Groth said.

The sanitary district last raised the sewer rates in 2010 and the water rates in 2006, according to Groth.

At present the average residential water rate – essentially the average quarterly bill – is about $38.22. That number would rise to about $39.34 after the 3-percent increase, according to a cost projection table provided by the district.

For the same time period, the large residential water rate of $50.58 would rise to about $52.06.

Water rates are also scheduled to jump for commercial, industrial and public-authority customers.

The sanitary district is waiting for permission from the state Public Service Commission to authorize the water rate increase, which Groth said he expected to happen.

The rate increase is scheduled to go into effect April 1 pending the PSC’s approval.

State law does not require a public hearing for the water rate increase.

But the sanitary district is scheduled to hold a public hearing on the proposed sewer rate increase Monday, Feb. 24, 4 p.m.

The hearing will be held at the sanitary district’s office at 8780 Morgan Road, Minocqua, just off State Highway 70 West.

The sanitary district’s board will accept public comment at that meeting and vote on the proposed sewer rate increase.
