Lakeland Union High School’s graduation in June will feature a Native American honor drum ceremony.
Members of the Lac du Flambeau tribe requested the song, and the Tribal Council took action in February to support the request.
In a letter to the school, the tribe said the song would be to honor graduating students.
“Our Lac du Flambeau Tribe acknowledges that there are many nationalities that attend Lakeland Union High School and we appreciate the relationship that has evolved over the years between LUHS and the Lac du Flambeau Tribe,” the letter reads.
LUHS Principal Jim Bouché said he conferred with school board members and a committee of students, and they all supported the idea.
Bouché said Ashland High School and Shawano High School have been doing honor drum songs during their graduations for several years.
The LUHS graduation ceremony is scheduled for Sunday, June 8.
