The April 13 Lakeland Union High School Finance Committee meeting saw the approval of the Stevens Point-based contractor Point of Beginning for the upcoming installation of artificial turf at the high school's stadium.
Point of Beginning has been used by LUHS in the past for planning of construction projects. An up front, $50,000 fee will go towards the contractor to begin work in diagramming, securing permits and ultimately assist in the bidding and selection of turf vendor.
LUHS financial manager Greg Kopp said Point of Beginning has been involved in "many" turf installation projects around the state of Wisconsin.
Kopp said the ultimate cost, with the contractor fees included, could range between $760,000 to $850,000.
"The reason for that range is the earth work that has to be done to prepare the field. We don't know exactly what has to be done until we do soil borings and see what's down there," Kopp said. "We believe it's going to be on the lower end, because the field drains very well. We don't believe we're going to have to spend a significant amount of money to run the storm water to a different location."
LUHS activities director Don Scharbarth said there will be an increase in the amount of water that drains off of the field, though it will be at a slower, more manageable rate. That water drains towards the adjacent football practice field.
"We've never had a problem before with our drainage, and we do not anticipate there being any issues going forward," Scharbarth said.
A recommend turf vendor is expected to be brought forth at the April 24 LUHS School Board meeting.
