U.S. Highway 51 north of Arbor Vitae was shut down very briefly last Friday evening following a two vehicle accident just south of the highway's junction with Day Lake and Gresham Lake roads. According to the Vilas County Sheriff's Office, Ryan Wilsmann of Marshfield was pulled over on the northbound shoulder in a 2015 Jeep Cherokee and facing north. He said he missed his turn and needed to perform a U turn. Wilsmann waited for several vehicles to pass before beginning his U turn. He told sheriff's deputies he didn't see a northbound 2015 Ford F-150 pickup truck driven by Blayne Kern of Bessemer, Mich. Kern said he saw Wilsmann pulled off the road and onto the shoulder and went to pass the Wilsmann's Jeep. He said that's when Wilsmann pulled out in front of him, leaving him no time to react. Kern's truck collided with the driver's side of Wilsmann's Jeep which rolled onto its passenger side near the southbound shoulder. Wilsmann was issued a citation for an illegal U turn. Neither Wilsmann, Kern or the passenger in Kern's truck were injured.
