Ascension has officially decided to end its fight against Marshfield Clinic wanting to build a 12-bed hospital. It will now focus on its own updates to the emergency department and rehabilitation services.
Ascension Health's fight to stop construction by Marshfield Clinic of a 12-bed hospital in Minocqua a few blocks from its own Howard Young Medical Center in Woodruff is officially over. Ascension owns HYMC.
In December, the Oneida County Board of Adjustment approved a conditional use permit (CUP) application from Marshfield Clinic to construct the facility.
That CUP application was denied a few months before by Oneida County's planning and zoning committee.
Marshfield Clinic filed an appeal which was heard in December when the BOA made its decision.
In an internal email to the Ascension North Region Board of Directors, the region's president, Debra Standridge and Sandra Anderson, the president of Howard Young, stated Ascension would not appeal the BOA's decision.
"As we have been through each stage of this process, we are grateful that the members of our local government took the necessary time to thoughtfully consider the impact this proposal will have on the community," the email reads. "We also are very appreciative of our associates and members of our community who provided unwavering support."
Standridge and Anderson said the focus will now be on Ascension's plans "to revitalize our facility beyond our current project, which will renovate our emergency department and rehabilitation services."
In response, Dr. Bill Melms and Dr. Michael Schaars, Regional Medical Directors for Marshfield Clinic, Thursday released a statement.
"We're excited that our project is moving forward," the statement reads. "We're in the process of identifying the next steps in the planning and construction process."
Marshfield Clinic plans to begin construction in the spring.
