Hartman to run for sheriff

Oneida County Sheriff Grady Hartman will ask voters this fall to keep him in office.

Hartman, who was appointed sheriff last year by Gov. Scott Walker, announced on Sunday that he would seek election for the sheriff’s position.

“So far I’ve enjoyed the job,” Hartman said in an interview. “I have a great staff and I have a great working relationship with other county officials, the county board, and I just hope to continue that.”

He said the county’s most important law enforcement issue at present is a growing heroin and methamphetamine problem.

“I’m concerned at the hardness of those drugs and the addiction,” Hartman said. “We’re working trying to get a handle on that.”

Hartman, a Rhinelander native, started working for the sheriff’s office in 1999 as a patrol deputy. He was promoted to sergeant in 2006, and also led the county SWAT team; he held those positions until his appointment as sheriff.

Prior to working for the sheriff’s office, Hartman was a police officer with the cities of Rhinelander, Baraboo and River Falls.

He graduated from UW-River Falls with a bachelor’s degree in business administration in 1996. He entered law enforcement, he said, to help others and for the diversity of experiences the job entails.

Hartman will not be the only local official seeking to remain in office. Brenda Behrle, Oneida County’s clerk of court, has taken out papers to seek reelection.

No one else has formally filed paperwork with the county clerk’s office for local races
