Mangerson replacement named
Vilas County judge had applied for seat

Gov. Scott Walker this week named a replacement for a state Court of Appeals post with Northwoods ties.

On Monday, Walker’s office said he appointed Thomas Hruz to replace Judge Mark Mangerson, who is retiring from the District 3 Court of Appeals in Wausau.

Mangerson, 65, a Rhinelander native and former Oneida County district attorney and circuit judge, announced in May that he would be stepping down this month to spend more time with his family.

In 2011, Walker appointed Mangerson to the appeals court. He later ran to keep the seat, winning a six-year spot.

Mangerson has four years remaining in his term. Hruz would replace Mangerson for that period of time, and would then have to seek re-election.

Hruz at present is a partner at a Milwaukee law firm. He received a bachelor’s degree from UW-Milwaukee, a master’s degree from UW-Madison and a law degree from Marquette University Law School, where he served as an editor of the Marquette Law Review.

He and his wife live in southeastern Wisconsin, but plan to move within the appeals court district, which covers a wide swath of central and northern Wisconsin.

In addition to Hruz, Vilas County Circuit Judge Neal Nielsen had also applied for Mangerson’s seat.

Nielsen said in a statement on Tuesday that he intends to continue serving Vilas County.

“Being the circuit court judge in Vilas County is the best job I have ever held,” Nielsen said. “I feel privileged to serve the people of this county in that capacity and look forward to doing so for years to come.”
