On behalf of the Mental Health Interagency Coalition of Northern Wisconsin, our deepest sympathy goes out to the family and friends of Robin Williams.
Robin Williams brought great happiness and laughter to many people around the world. His death by suicide was a shock to many individuals nationwide. Unfortunately, severe mental illness has taken another life.
On Aug. 11, 2014, Robin Williams was one of the 107 suicides that occurred that day. In 2010, the United States had 38,364 suicides. That is equal to one suicide every 13.7 minutes (CDC 2010).
As stated by the American Association of Suicidology (AAS), “Suicide, which is the tenth leading cause of death in the United States, continues to impact lives and communities around the globe … The grief and trauma that are often associated with suicide often leave people and communities at a loss.”
If you or a family member are having suicidal thoughts or have made a plan, there is reason for hope. Depression is a treatable condition.
