Highway 51 construction to start again
Work on last portion of current phase into Woodruff begins next week

Brian Jopek
Reporter

Work on the latest phase of the U.S. Highway 51 reconstruction project continues after Labor Day.

It was originally supposed to have been completed by the end of June or the first part of July, but officials with the  Wisconsin Department of Transportation and the project’s general contractor, Advance Construction of Green Bay, have said the extended winter and other factors have accounted for changes in the completion schedule.

Randy Chester of Advance Construction said starting at noon on Sep. 2, barricades and lane closures for traffic control would be set up.

Work on Hwy. 51 itself, excavating and moving material to where it would be needed, he said, would commence the following day.

The construction work, a bulk of it as it has throughout the project going back last year when it began in Minocqua will  include replacement of infrastructural items such as storm sewer drains and catch basins.

Construction will go up to Third Street in Woodruff.

Chester said everything should be done up to that point by the second week in October.

That will include completion of a totally reconstructed intersection at Hwy. 51 and County Highway J.

After that, there won’t be any further major construction planned for Hwy. 51 in the Woodruff and Arbor Vitae area until the next phase, which will go through both towns.

It would end just past the intersection of Hwy. 51 and State Highway 70 East.

That part of the project, originally planned for 2015 and then moved to 2017, has now been pushed back by the DOT to 2018.
