Cash flow headache on the mend for transit commission

The Vilas County Board approved a loan of $50,000 for the Oneida-Vilas Transit Commission at a meeting this past week. The loan is in conjunction with an advance of the same amount from Oneida County. The money will assist the commission with cash flow issues while waiting for funds from the federal and state government.

High winds cut through Oneida and Vilas counties
The recent warm weather in the area proved too good to be true as high winds wreaked havoc throughout Oneida and Vilas counties this week.

Large portions of the state experienced high winds, with Wisconsin Public Service reporting 20,300 customers without power, while having restored power to 48,000 more as of Tuesday night. (subscriber access)

The County/Tribal Concerns Committee is officially back after an approximate five month hiatus. The committee has rebranded itself and now includes three new members and three representatives from the tribe. Oneida, Vilas superintendents have their say on school start date
The majority of the district administrators throughout Oneida and Vilas counties gathered last week to discuss local topics of interest within education.

Collectively, the group is known as the Oneida-Vilas School Board Association (OVSBA) and includes 10 school districts throughout the two counties with an open invitation to the Mercer School District. (subscriber access)

Vilas County forestry talks landfill expansion
The Vilas County Forestry, Recreation and Land Committee discussed options for assisting with the County G Landfill expansion at a regular meeting last week.

Vilas County Highway Committee wants different truck bids
The Vilas County Highway Committee rejected the bids for four new pickup trucks - three one quarter-ton trucks and a one ton truck - at its meeting Tuesday.

Vilas County Social Services on road to getting new vehicles
After a 50 minute discussion the Vilas County Social Service Committee passed a motion refering the researching of new vehicles to the public property committee.

The vehicles in question belong to the social services department with the most frequent vehicle having issues being a 2010 Dodge Charger. The vehicle issues have disrupted the staff's work and raised safety concerns. (subscriber access)

Times asks Vilas DA to investigate Boulder Junction Town Board
The Lakeland Times is asking the Vilas County district attorney to look into what appears to be an improper payout of almost $9,000 to the town clerk and another smaller payout to a town employee, and the newspaper has filed open-meetings complaints in both instances. (subscriber access)

Area snowmobile accidents last week result in one fatality
What may be one of the final big weekends for snowmobiling in the area this season last week began with two accidents and both on Friday.
