After a sink hole was reported on Monday, June 5, on State Highway 17 near the intersection of Grosser Lane, north of the town of Phelps, detours were planned to accommodate traffic while the road is repaired.

At approximately 5:30 p.m. on Monday, June 5, the Vilas County Communications Center received a report of a sink hole forming on State Highway 17 near the intersection of Grosser Lane, north of the town of Phelps.

Man sentenced to prison for Hwy. 70 burglary spree
A Lac du Flambeau man charged in connection with a string of burglaries to residences along State Highway 70 between Minocqua and Lac du Flambeau between Christmas 2015 and early February 2016 was sentenced June 15 to four years in prison and five years extended supervision. (subscriber access)

Vilas highway committee approves preliminary 2018 budget
The Vilas County board's highway committee OK'd a preliminary department budget for 2018 on Tuesday, calling for the addition of two people.

That action followed an earlier vote to add the positions, the funding for both of them based predominately on state funding projections for work department personnel do which generates revenue from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation. (subscriber access)

HR request sparks discussion on lack of policy for bonuses
The Vilas County Finance Committee denied a request from the Human Resources Committee for contingency funds this week. The request was for $3,000, intended as a bonus for HR department head Debra Bohn for saving the county a considerable sum in medical insurance expenses. (subscriber access)

Vilas HR committee again turns down zoning position reclass
The Vilas County board's human resources committee once again voted against the reclassification of a zoning department position Thursday.

The committee's vote was 3-2 and last month it turned down the initial request.

At a June 1 meeting of the zoning committee, members voted to have the matter returned to the human resources committee for reconsideration. (subscriber access)

Shoreland zoning still a sticking point for conservation committee
In past meetings, shoreland zoning has been hotly debated by the Vilas County Land and Water Conservation Committee. Some feel the issue is not one the committee should undertake, while others were adamant it should start with them and a recommendation be forwarded to the county board. Many feel shoreland zoning authority should be returned to the county level rather than subject to the "one size fits all" directive of the state's Act 55. (subscriber access)

Helo makes debut as new Vilas County K9
Vilas County Sheriff's Department recently added a new member to its team, Helo, the one-and-a-half-year-old Belgian Malinois from Hungary. Deputy Zac Stern, the K9 handler, is excited to continue working and getting to know Helo, a dog with a seemingly endless amount of energy and drive, and a replacement for the previous K9 unit, Draco. Stormy Sunday for the Lakeland area
Thunderstorms moved through the Lakeland area early Sunday afternoon, bringing heavy rain, high wind and in places, hail.

Vilas County man sentenced to 12 years for distributing child pornography
Jeffrey M. Anderson, Acting United States Attorney for the Western District of Wisconsin, announced that Benjamin McHugh, 36, of St. Germain, was sentenced Tuesday by U.S. District Judge William Conley to 12 years in federal prison for distributing child pornography. This prison term is to be followed by a lifetime period of supervised release. McHugh pleaded guilty to this offense on March 9.
