Badger State Games torch to stop in Minocqua on Jan. 16

January 14, 2020

To kick off the start of the 2020 Badger State Winter Games, a snowmobile-based torch relay will make its way from Wausau to Eagle River, stopping in Minocqua on Jan. 16.

Local snowmobile clubs from Wausau, Merrill, Tomahawk, Hazelhurst, Minocqua and Arbor Vitae will pass the torch to one another before lighting an olympic cauldron — in conjunction with the World Championships Snowmobile Derby — in Eagle River on Jan. 17.

The stop in Minocqua will take place at approximately 2:25 p.m. on Jan. 16 at the Bearskin Trailhead. Anyone interested in attending is encouraged to arrive 15-20 minutes early in case the group is running ahead of schedule.

The Badger State Games were started in 1985 with a summer edition offering olympic-style events for amateur athletes of all ages. The Winter Games were started a few years later in 1989. Today, the Badger State Games are hosted by Wausau twice-annually.

The Winter Games feature 28 sporting events including archery, cross country skiing and table tennis. The majority of events are held in the Wausau area with other events in Appleton, Stevens Point and Eagle River. For more information about the Badger State
