‘Beginning Oil Painting’ workshop with Barbara Friedman on Aug. 30 and 31
August 23, 2019
Land O’ Lakes Arts (LOLA) will hold a 2-day workshop on “Beginning Oil Painting” with artist Barbara Friedman from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Aug. 30 and 31.
In this workshop Friedman will work in the alla-prima style of painting — wet on wet. Composition, value, lights, shadows, and color mixing, along with learning about transparent colors versus opaque will be focused on. This class is suited as an introduction for adults who have never painted with oils, as well as a chance for those with some experience to learn something new. With a fruit still-life, Friedman will begin the learning process by “seeing.”
“I call it ‘meditation in action’, because we become so absorbed in doing the process, we are not thinking about anything else,” Friedman said.
Because of the slow drying quality of oil, artists are able work longer on paintings, also allowing colors to blend easily with one another.
“Oil paints have flexibility and depth of color. They can be applied in many different ways — glazes diluted with terpenoid for thin layers or used thickly for impasto techniques. Opaque, transparent and translucent painting styles, and many textural variations, all lie within an oil paints range,” Friedman said.
Friedman is from the Milwaukee area and spends time at her seasonal home in Watersmeet, Mich. She is a multi-disciplined artist, working in oils, watercolor, and stained glass. During the warmer months Friedman can be found plein-air painting in her perennial gardens. During winter, she is back inside the studio focusing on stained glass art. Friedman enjoys teaching and sharing her many talents. She is especially motivated to teach the skills that her students will need to connect with their own creative spirit and style.
Cost of the class is $185. Deadline for registration/payment is Friday, Aug. 23. Supply list is needed.
