The Sturm Family and Friends Building Community group in conjunction with the Town of Boulder Junction, the Boulder Junction Community Foundation and the Boulder Junction Lions Club, is entering its final phase of raising the funds to complete the public restroom at the Boulder Junction Sports and Recreation Park near Sturm Memorial Field.
The “official” community campaign to construct a public restroom at the Boulder Junction Sports and Recreation Park at Sturm Memorial Field concluded Oct. 31, 2019. The campaign was extended through the first quarter of 2020 in order for more bricks to be sold, accommodate end of year giving, and to encourage 2020 personal and corporate budgets to be considered for a donation.
As of late February 2020, a total of $69,336 was received in donations and grants into the Restroom Fund at the Community Foundation; $7,000 of that was for named ancillary items at the restroom site including two bike racks, a water fountain/water bottle filling station and a deluxe bike repair station and pad.
“The addition of restroom facilities to our sports field recreational area provides for the family friendly comfort of our visitors,” Boulder Junction town chairman Dennis Reuss said. “This enhancement will enable the community to host more functions at this location, there are also added amenities that will be a benefit to the bicyclist. We are pleased to have the support of the Strum Family who have spearheaded this endeavor in memory of Earl Sturm.”
At the January 2020 meeting, the Boulder Junction Town Board approved the contract for Romtec, Inc. based in Roseburg, Ore., to provide the restroom design and materials. The actual construction/installation will be a contributed effort by the volunteers of the Boulder Junction Lions Club and members of the community. This community partnership is keeping the actual costs very low on the project. Anticipated date of the public restroom completion is expected to be late June or July of this year.
The facility will be especially appreciated by the athletes and spectators at Sturm Memorial Ballfield, the children who use the playground (and their parents), and those who attend special events at the park. Since it is near the skateboard park and the Heart of Vilas County Bike Trail, the new facility will serve skaters, bikers, and walkers as well.
The Sturm Family and Friends Building Community is seeking additional funds before the construction stage begins for the project between now and May 1, allowing as many community members as possible to purchase an engraved brick in honor or memory of someone, or make a donation. Any amount would be appreciated and bricks are still available to name up until May 1.
