The Musky Capital of the World is celebrating 63 years of Musky Jamboree’s this summer, from Friday, Aug. 9 through Sunday, Aug. 11, with a variety of activities happening each day.
Friday, Aug. 9
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is holding a free “Learn to Fish Musky Workshop” at the community center from 8:30 a.m. to noon. The public is welcome to attend the morning workshop. After the workshop, head out with a mentor (local guide, musky club member, or DNR staff) to fish in the afternoon. Attendance at the classroom workshop is a prerequisite to attend afternoon fishing. Space is limited to 12 to 15 participants for the mentored outing. Gear will be provided; participants are welcome to bring their own gear if they have it.
Everyone looks forward to the Street Party at Coontail Corner on Friday night, from 7 to 10 p.m., with live music by Hip Pocket. American Legion Post 451 will be serving beverages during the entertainment. In the case of inclement weather, the Boulder Junction Community Center is the back-up location.
Saturday, Aug. 10
The Boulder Junction Historical Society will hold activities including a historical presentation, a brat and BBQ luncheon, raffles and a bake sale, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the community center along with guided tours of the Historical Museum and Depot. At this year’s presentation, beginning at noon, Susie Govier will present “Remembering Aqualand,” very much a part of Boulder Junction history. All proceeds benefit Boulder Junction Area Historical Society. Donations appreciated.
Saturday afternoon is the third year of the Best Fish Fry Cook-Off at various outdoor downtown locations. From 3 to 6 p.m. there will be live music by Ron Harrison Entertainment at the Music on Main Street stage next to Peeplelures. Beverages will be served by the Boulder Junction Lion’s Club next to the music. Fish Fry and voting is from 3 to 5 p.m. with the award presentation at 5:30 p.m.
Later that evening, head over to Aqualand Alehouse for some more live music on their outdoor stage. Georgia Rae Family Band brings its progressive sound inspired by a mix of Americana, contemporary folk and roots, and a little jazzy swing from 4 to 7 p.m. Then from 7:30 to 11 p.m., Tony Cuchetti, will be bringing his full band with roots in soul, R&B, and funk.
Sunday, Aug. 11
Sunday’s tradition of closing Main Street for a full day of activities continues. Handicapped parking and shuttle service is available from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The day will begin at the Boulder Junction Baseball Park with the Musky Fun Run 5K and 10K race with registration at 6 a.m. and the race begins at 7:30 a.m. Advanced registration is recommended. Registration is $25 through July 30 and $30 beginning July 31. Kid’s races are free.
From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., over 150 artists fill Main Street and Hwy M South at our Musky Jamboree Arts & Crafts Show, including furniture, fine art, jewelry and many other handcrafted items. Additionally, the Lions Club Flea Market will be held on the community center grounds. Local service groups and area restaurants will line the streets with food and beverage concessions.
Be sure to vote for your favorite automobile at the 28th annual Musky Day Car Show, in memory of George Scholz. This show is an opportune chance for new and experienced competitors to shine. New award this year: Boulder Junction Car of the Year Award including travel package. Early bird registration, through Aug. 1, is just $12 and $15 beginning Aug. 2. Car Show awards will be announced at 2:30 p.m. with the 50/50 raffle winner following the awards.
In the Musky Capital of the World, fishing takes center stage with a Kids Casting Contest from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the west end of Main Street near the Car Show. All children 14 or younger are encouraged to show off their casting skills and compete for prizes. Prizes will be awarded at 2:15 p.m. Be sure to stop by the Meet the Guides booth next to the Kids Casting Contest area for tips on fishing. Children will also enjoy the Kid’s Zone on Highway M South with rides and games including a bungie jump, shoot & shower basketball game, bounce house, goldfish toss and train rides.
Make sure to look up between 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for the Musky Day Fly-In. Held at the Payzer Memorial Field located 2 miles north of Main Street, watch the numerous colorful planes of all varieties take off and land at the airport on Boulder Lake.
Live music by Big Road performing classic rock, funk and soul to real deal blues on the east end of Main Street from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. From 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Steve Matier and the O’Bros will be playing live at McGann’s Pub & Wine Bar and DJ Ty will be outside the Boulder Beer Bar all day.
