Check out LOLA’s adult summer classes
July 23, 2019
Past summer seasons Land O’ Lakes Arts (LOLA) has offered art classes geared towards kids, but this summer classes are designed to welcome adults as well. LOLA now calls this its Summer Art- Venture.
“Our Summer Art-Venture classes aren’t only for kids and families,” LOLA program director Wendy Powalisz said. “We have created these classes to be intriguing for adults to join too.”
There are a variety of classes to take in the Summer Art-Venture. One being a Simple Silk Screening class offered on July 23, where students create their own “brand” and hand silk screen it onto a T-shirt or bandana.
Another class combines watercolor painting and a printing press in the Watercolor Monotypes class on July 25, taught by guest artist and Conserve School teaching fellow, George Rue.
There is also a two-day class on “Invasive Paper Making” with guest artist Debbie Jircik and ISCCW invasive specialist, Denise Fauntleroy, on Aug. 6 and 8. Students will learn about aquatic invasives and make paper from milfoil fibers. They will also have the chance to take a ride on the pulp beater bike, make nature prints, and a simple book.
Summer Art-Venture classes are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays and run until the end of August. Classes are $12 per person or $10 each for a child and adult together, unless noted. Visit the LOLA website calendar for more Summer Art-Venture classes and registration.
Other adult classes are offered at LOLA this summer as well. Fiber artist DeEtta Beebe is an accomplished and respected rug hooker and will teach a two-part “Advanced Rug Hooking” class on Aug. 12 and 13. This class is to inspire students to create their own landscape design using techniques to help complete a successful hooked “photo.” Color planning, finishing techniques and information for mounting on solid material will be taught.
“Indigo Dyeing — From Seed to Dye” class will occur on Aug. 15 with artist Debbie Jircik. In this class students will use fresh leaf Japanese indigo dye on silk scarves, and create an organic vat with powered indigo to do simple shibori resist techniques on a cotton bandana.
LOLA resident artist Wendy Powalisz will teach her popular class, “Intro to Watercolor Painting” on Aug. 17. Students will learn the basics of transparent watercolor painting as well as watercolor paper and paints, wet techniques, dry brushing, hard and soft edges, brush strokes and techniques using household items.
