Closing with style

February 25, 2020 by Brett LaBore

The Lakeland wrestling team brought three Thunderbirds to sectionals in Oconto Falls on Saturday, Feb. 22.

Sawyer Duir, Zane Grams and Jason Hilgart participated in the meet.

“We put our division 2 sectionals against any sectional in the state,” coach Adam Bremer said.

In the 106 class, senior Duir took on two wrestlers. In the quarterfinals, he fell to Easton Worachek of Luxemburg-Casco by a pin in 3:42.

In the consolation semifinals, Duir fell to Oconto Falls’ Graeson Pankratz by a 4-1 decision.

“He made a great run at conference, regionals and sectionals, but definitely feel like he wrestled very well,” Bremer said.

Grams came into the tournament and got great experience as an underclassmen. In the 132 class, he fell to Oconto Falls’ Tyler Budz by a pin in 3:03 in the quarterfinals.

“Being a sectional qualifier was a goal and huge accomplishment for Zane,” Bremer said. “To be able to have that experience as a freshman is a great experience for Zane.”

Another senior, Hilgart took part in the 145 class. He fell to Denmark’s Ethan Schwartz in the quarterfinals by a pin in 0:49.

“Jason’s first match came against the eventual champion,” Bremer said. “That kid was heads and tails above the rest and won handily through the tourney.”

He came back to win his consolation semifinal match over Neil Bretl from Antigo by a 10-8 decision.

“Believe it or not, but they never wrestled each other,” Bremer said. “Though it be a bit of a challenge, Jason rose to the challenge and had three takedowns in the match.”

Then, in the third place match, he fell by a 12-4 major decision to New London’s Logan Heimbruch, though the match was closer than the final score indicated.

“Down 7-4, Jason attempted a move and he ended up going to his back and (Heimbruch) got two takedowns for five points (at the end),” Bremer said. “Jason put everything into winning. Jason contributed to program and was a phenomenal leader.”

The Thunderbirds’ season came to an end on Saturday night.
