Fern Ridge Trail snowshoe event on Jan. 18
January 17, 2020
There will be a snowshoe event held at Fern Ridge Trail in St. Germain from 1 to 4 p.m. on Jan. 18. The event will take place at the new parking area for the trail, 2005 Forest Lane, off of Juve Road.
Attendees can choose between a shorter 0.6 mile loop or a longer 1.2 mile loop. Warm up afterwards at the bonfire with hot chocolate, cookies and marshmallows. The trail is very hilly, so be prepared for a challenging, but beautiful hike through the mature forest. The event is free and open to all ages. Donations are welcome and go to support trail building and maintenance at Fern Ridge.
Although Fern Ridge Trail has been in existence for over 40 years, it wasn’t very well known. The property containing the trail was purchased by the Town of St. Germain in 2017. Since the purchase, volunteers have been working on a trail reroute and additional trail construction, including the addition of a bog boardwalk and a new 0.6 mile connector loop to the new parking area. This fall, the parking lot was moved from the unsafe location along Hwy 155 to the site of the town’s yard waste site. The new parking area can accommodate more vehicles and will allow for expansion of the recreational uses of the property in the future.
This event is sponsored by the St. Germain Non-Motorized Trail Committee. The Non-Motorized Trail Committee is hoping to bring more attention to this superb trail through this and future events. For more information, contact Anne at 715-614-3711 or go to the Fern Ridge Trail Facebook page.
