Former Lakeland Times writer found dead in Green Lake County

April 24, 2020 by Brian Jopek

A Beaver Dam man who recently worked for The Lakeland Times was found dead in a lake in Green Lake County on April 19.

According to a press release from the Green Lake County Sheriff’s Office, its 911 dispatch center received a request from the Beaver Dam Police Department just after 12 p.m. on Sunday, April 19 for assistance in locating a 42 year old man last known to have gone fishing in the Kingston area the day before.

The press release states a Green Lake County Sheriff’s Office Deputy found the vehicle associated with the man at Spring Lake Park in the town of Kingston just before 1 p.m. on April 19.

Deputies were unable to locate anyone associated with the vehicle and subsequently requested assistance from fire departments, water rescue and emergency medical service personnel as they suspected the subject — later identified as Jacob Friede — may be in the lake. Rescue units were able to locate Friede face down in an area of lake vegetation near his small overturned skiff. He was pronounced dead at the scene by the Green Lake County Coroner’s Office.

The incident remains under investigation by the Green Lake County Sheriff’s Office and the Green Lake County Coroner’s Office.

Friede was employed by The Lakeland Times between September 2018 and January of this year.

He began his time with the newspaper as its sports reporter and then made the switch to outdoors reporter.
