The Lakeland girls’ tennis team participated in subsectionals on Monday in Marshfield. Kiah Gauthier won her match to advance to sections.
Gauthier took on Pacelli’s Amanda Lansing for the third time this season at No.1 singles. Gauthier was the four seed and Lansing the five seed. Gauthier won 6-4, 6-4.
“[Kiah] found a way to beat her for the third time which can be tough,” explained coach Tom Oestreich. “[Amanda] kept coming up to the net so we changed our strategy and hit some groundstrokes with pace that she couldn’t handle.”
That was the only flight that advanced for the T-Birds, who placed sixth in an eight-team field that included most of the Great Northern Conference.
Lorraine Hammes took on Medford’s Sophie Brost at No. 2 singles, an opponent that Hammes lost to at the conference tournament. This time, Hammes beat Brost 6-2, 6-1.
“It was awesome for Lorraine to turn it around and beat her in quite convincing fashion,” Oestreich said. “Lorraine had a super day. She hit the ball and had minimum unforced errors, hitting groundstrokes with pace.”
Then, Hammes played the top seeded Kieren Nortunen from Ashland. Nortunen won 6-1, 6-0.
“Lorraine played well and hit the ball real well,” Oestreich said. “The girl from Ashland is good. Lorraine put up a good battle, went out there, had fun and I was happy with the way she hit.”
Maria Gironella played as the two seed at No. 3 singles. She played seven-seeded Anna Hackett from Wausau Newman. Hackett pulled out the win 6-3, 2-6, 7-5.
“[Anna] started hitting a ton of unforced errors and Maria put up a really good fight against a girl who could really hit the ball,” Oestreich said. “As the season went on, [Maria] continues to grow with every match that she plays.”
At No. 4 singles, five seeded Emma Rose lost to Assumption’s Carly Hintz 6-4, 6-4.
In No. 1 doubles, the team of Hayley Fieck and Vivian Trapp played at the five seed against Julia Welter and Grace Sukanen of Wausau Newman. Welter and Sukanen prevailed and won 6-0, 6-1.
“Hayley and Viv were really aggressive at the net and it was fun to watch,” Oestreich said. “They ended their season on a strong point, playing to their potential.”
Britta Salquist and Anna Maulson played as the four seed against Assumption’s Kendall Schmidt and Izzy Jungworth in No. 2 doubles. Assumption won 6-3, 6-2.
Brenna Fricke and Phoebe Wirtz also played as the four seed at No. 3 doubles. They took on Ashland’s Tegan Mcfarlane and Isabelle Rasmussen. Mcfarlane/Rasmussen won 6-3, 6-2.
“All the girls at subs played up to their potential at subs,” Oestreich said. “Everyone hit really well, but you get to this time of the season and everyone’s good.”
Gauthier played her sectional match at the Menard’s tennis facility yesterday in Eau Claire. Coverage of that match will be in the Oct. 15 edition of The Times
