Two Illinois men died as the result of two separate snowmobile accidents in Vilas County on Saturday, Feb. 22, and another Illinois resident was killed in a third snowmobile accident in Iron County on Sunday, Feb. 23.
In the first incident, a press release from the Vilas County Sheriff’s Office issued Saturday morning stated a 911 call was received just after 4 a.m. reporting a snowmobile versus tree accident near the shoreline on Little St. Germain Lake.
The initial report was a snowmobile had struck a tree and the operator was not breathing.
Upon arrival of emergency service personnel, it was determined the 38-year-old snowmobile operator was dead.
The press release also stated during this incident, another male subject was out looking for the crash scene on his snowmobile and went through the ice on Little St. Germain Lake.
He was able to get out of the water and has no injuries.
A second press release issued Saturday afternoon by the sheriff’s office said the dispatch center received a call just after 9 a.m. reporting a snowmobile accident in the woods just off of Plum Lake in the town of Plum Lake. First responders determined the 27-year-old operator of that machine was also dead.

The 40-year-old man who’d operated that snowmobile was declared dead at the scene.
