Lakeland cross country shows depth

September 10, 2019 by Brett LaBore

The next destination for the Lakeland cross country team was the Highlander Invitational at Tendick Park in Saukville on Friday, Sept. 6.

The girls finished fourth with a team score of 125 and the boys finished fourth with a team score of 146.

Ashley Peterson finished first overall with a time of 19:18.3, 21 seconds better than second place.

“(Ashley’s) just very consistent,” coach Dan Claussen said. “She goes out and gets the job done.”

Aubrey Anderson also finished in the top ten. She finished ninth with a time of 20:18.0 and was Lakeland’s second best runner.

Kate Melms finished in the top 20. She finished 20th with a time of 20:43.4.

“For Kate to finish in the top 20 really speaks volumes,” Claussen said.

Grace Kern continued her good start to the season. She finished 49th with a time of 22:00.4.

Kate Vizanko finished 52nd with a time of 22:07.6.

Victor Masayesva was the time boys’ runner. He finished 25th with a time of 17:52.7.

“The guys pace themselves off Victor,” Claussen said. “He’s the guy that’s going to hopefully get us in a position to do well at the end of the year.”

Right behind him was Casey Van Hefty. He finished 26th with a time of 17:53.0.

Tyler Teichmiller finished 28th with a time of 18:00.3, as he continues to get better.

“Tyler came out of the summer running more in the summer than he’s ever been,” Claussen said. ‘He’s come in really good shape and he continues to get better and better.”

Scott Balas finished 31st with a time of 18:06.2, sticking with some of the other boys’ runners.

Jake Van Hefty finished 50th with a time of 18:38.1. The top five boys’ runners all finished within 50 seconds of each other, a plan they went into the meet with.

“Our race plan on Friday night was our top boys runners to all run together,” Claussen said.

Their next meet comes tonight at Frey Field starting at 4:15 p.m. Coverage of that will be in the Sept. 13 edition of The Times.

After that, the Thunderbirds travel to Wausau for a meet on Saturday, Sept. 21 at Tribute Golf Course.
