Lakeland girls tennis works together for win

September 06, 2019 by Brett LaBore

The Lakeland girls tennis team was back on its home courts playing Ironwood, Michigan for the second time this year on Tuesday.

In their first meeting, the Thunderbirds won with ease. It was more of the same Tuesday with the Thunderbirds winning 7-0.

“I told the girls going in the match we were very capable of doing that, best I’d seen of our entire team hitting and last night was the first night I saw that across the board,” coach Thomas Oestreich said.

In No. 1 singles, Lakeland’s Kiah Gauthier defeated Zaida Lagalo 6-4, 6-2.

Lakeland’s Lorraine Hammes took on Lexi Holm in No. 2 singles. Hammes won 6-0, 6-0.

“(Lorraine) played her best match of the season,” Oestreich said. “She was hitting the ball with pace. She was very excited about it, hitting the ball with pace, hitting the ball with confidence.”

No. 3 singles saw Lakeland’s Emma Rose take on Gloria Kennedy. Rose used good placement to win points and took the match 6-2, 6-0.

In No. 4 singles, Lakeland’s Maria Gironella continued her undefeated play, beating Faith Grewe 6-0, 6-1 and remaining undefeated on the year.

There were a couple of new doubles’ teams. The first one was Hayley Fieck and Vivian Trapp in No. 1 doubles. They defeated Mckensi Koval and Leilah Anderson 6-1, 6-1.

“They had a lot of nice groundstrokes. They were smiling, playing well. Hayley was doing good at the net and Vivian is a good athlete, running around in the back,” Oestreich said.

Lakeland’s Anna Maulson and Britta Salquist formed the other new double’s team. They took on Jasmine Benson and Laney Osterholm and won 6-1, 6-0.

The tandem worked together as Salquist worked in the back while Maulson would slam it home near the net.

“Anna was doing an awesome job at the net last night and I saw Britta in the back chasing a lot of tennis balls,” Oestreich said.

No. 3 doubles saw a familiar team of Brenna Fricke and Phoebe Wirtz. Together they defeated Isabell Castillo and Audrey Bastman 6-0, 6-1. Fricke and Wirtz used good communication and chemistry to work together to win points.

Their next match came Thursday Columbus Catholic. Following that, Lakeland hosts a quad on Saturday starting at 9:30 a.m.
