The Lakeland gymnastics’ team participated in its second meet of the season, their first at home on Jan. 14 when they took on Chequamegon.
“It was fun but also a little stressful,” coach Mikaila Walker said. “This was our first home meet and my first meet hosting for gymnastics ever so I felt a little pressure.”
Chequamegon beat the Thunderbirds 101.6-26.4.
“I think the ladies who got to compete last night worked really hard from our last meet to improve on things the judges suggested they work on, and it showed.,” Walker said.
In floor exercise, Katy Mueth finished in the top three with a score of 5.850, good for third place. Judge one gave her a 5.8 and judge two a 5.9.
“Katy continues to improve her routines and is an amazing athlete,” Walker said.
Another third place finish came from Anna Smith. This was her first meet of the season. She finished third on the vault with a score of score of 7.7. The scores were 7.6 from judge one and 7.8 from judge two.
Smith also competed on the floor where she finished sixth with a score of 4.45.
“Coming into her first meet, Anna Smith did really well and with some work her performance will continue to improve,” Walker said.
Both Mueth and Smith participated in uneven bars as well. Smith finished fourth with a score of 4.4 and Mueth finished fifth with a score of 4.0.
“We have a meet at home next week,” Walker said. “It’s just continuing to work on routines and stay focused, which is hard during finals week.”
The Thunderbirds return to the Lakeland fieldhouse for a conference matchup with Rhinelander on Thursday, Jan. 23. Competition begins at 5:45 p.m.
