From chip carving to watercolor to weaving and more, Land O’ Lakes Arts has a variety of classes coming up next month.
Freestyle Chip Carving
Wood carver John Modjewski will teach a class on Freestyle Chip Carving from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Nov. 2. Chip carving is a style of carving in which knives or chisels are used to remove small chips of wood material from a flat surface in a single piece. This class is suitable for experienced carvers, although beginners are welcome.
Students will work with flat basswood plaques to create a design for carving. Cost of this adult class is $55. Knife is needed. Deadline for registration/payment is Saturday, Oct. 26.
Watercolor Painting — Northwoods Landscapes
Resident artist, Wendy Powalisz is back with her popular class, Watercolor Painting — Northwoods Landscapes from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 7. Students will learn the basics of transparent watercolor painting. From the foundational washes, to fun techniques that use a variety of tools, students will gain confidence, and learn to appreciate this expressive medium.
An 11-by-14-inch Northwoods landscape will be created. Class costs $45 for adults and teens. All materials supplied and no experience necessary. Deadline for registration/payment is Thursday, Oct. 31.
Eco-Printed Nature Journal
Eco-artist, Debbie Jircik will teach an Eco-Printed Nature Journal class from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 12. In this class students will explore the process of botanical contact printing on paper and incorporate these papers as structure of their own hand-crafted journal.
Basic book structures will be learned with sewn in signatures based on the concertina (accordion) fold along with other incorporated papers. Soft covers made with Jircik’s Circle of Life Studio handmade paper. All supplies will be provided. However, if students have special pressed leaves they’d like to use as prints, they may bring them.
Cost of class is $65 for adults. No experience necessary. Deadline for registration/payment is Friday, Nov. 8.
Holiday Card Basket Weaving
Basket weaver Dianne Mockler returns with a Holiday Card Basket Weaving class from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 14. Weave a simple basket to display holiday cards, or fill with greenery for a festive centerpiece.
In this class, learn traditional basket weaving techniques, plus hints and tips on shaping, from Mockler. Several color choices will be available, including traditional Christmas and more. Approximate size: 8-by-5-by-7 inches tall (plus the height of the handle).
Cost of class is $50 for adults and teens 16 and older, and is suitable for all weaving levels. All materials supplied. Deadline for registration/payment is Thursday, Nov. 7.
Home school classes
LOLA’s home school classes will start back up with a class on Tuesday, Nov. 5 on Found Object Paintings, and Tuesday, Nov 19 on Marbled Clay “Thankful Leaves.” Understand patterns in nature in this watercolor painting workshop with the award-winning artist Dale Popovich Tuesday, Nov. 26.
