The Manitowish Waters Lakes Association held its 27th annual meeting on Saturday, July 27 at the North Lakeland Discovery Center. The attendees were welcomed by MWLA president Bob Becker who described the association’s accomplishments throughout the previous year and explained goals for the upcoming year.
The major goal continues to be a partnership with the North Lakeland Discovery Center, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, the towns of Manitowish Waters and Boulder Junction to protect waters from aquatic invasive species.
Becker also reported on the damage large wakes can do to shorelines and animal habitat. He reported that the town board, MWLA, and concerned citizens will be working together to come up with solutions to educate the public about slow-no-wake areas and large wakes made by boats pulling tubes and wake boards.
During the business portion of the meeting, the following officers were elected for one-year officer terms: president Greg Holt, vice president Dennis Wilm, secretary Angela Dombrowicki, and treasurer Eleanor Butler. Mike McKeon and Carla Hameister were elected as new directors for a two-year term; returning directors for two-year terms: Tom Kramer, Jody Miller, and Gale Wolf. Karen Dixon will continue as Immediate Past President as Becker has decided to resign from the board. Other members of the board include Paul Puccinelli, Mary Bowlus; Greg Holt; and Delp Schafer.
Becker recognized and thanked departing board member, Bob Stowers, for his many years of service on the board. The membership recognized Becker for his many years of service and for his three years as MWLA president.
Educational program presentations were made by NLDC water program coordinator Emily Heald, David Bartling of Bartling Cranberry Company, Headwaters Basin Chapter chairman Walleyes for Tomorrow Tom Kramer, and Quita Sheehan, Vilas County Water conservationist.
Summer water interns Nicole Spears, Jarod Scheff, and Eric Curtis showed samples of curly leaf pondweed, provided information on how to monitor for AIS, and gave information on the programs that are available through the Discovery Center that teach how to monitor for AIS.
