The Mercer Public Library will offer new ways to stay connected with the library this summer with virtual programming and an online reading challenge for all ages. Both are accessible to all area residents through the library’s website, even for those who do not hold a Mercer Library card.
A Summer Reading Challenge for kids ages 0-14 and a separate challenge for ages 15-adult will both provide fun incentives to keep reading this summer. The library is using an online reading challenge platform called Beanstack. Participants can register for a free account through the library’s website or using the free Beanstack app, then record their summer reading to qualify for digital badges, entries into prize drawings at the end of summer, and great prizes purchased from Mercer-area businesses.
Prizes for the kids’ summer reading challenge include T-shirts, ice cream, and gift certificates from local businesses, and board games for the whole family. Prizes for adults include one-of-a-kind Mercer Public Library coffee mugs handmade by the artists at Odonata, gift certificates to area restaurants and businesses, and more. All prizes are while supplies last. The Summer Reading Challenge begins June 15 and continues until Au. 21, but registration is open now.
Because most in-person library events have been canceled for the summer, the Mercer Library is also offering a summer full of virtual children’s programs by partnering with Page Turners, an award-winning children’s show production company. Page Turners is providing fun new video content every weekday from now through August, including shows, crafts, author interviews, and more. Library fans can join a private Facebook group to get access to new content released every day.
Both the reading challenge and the virtual programming are available to everyone at no cost. More information about both programs is available on the Mercer Library’s website, www.mercerpubliclibrary.org, including links to the virtual summer program Facebook group and to the Beanstack Summer Reading Challenge website and app.
The Mercer Library’s Summer Reading Challenge is sponsored by the Friends of the Mercer Public Library. The online reading platform was brought to you by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction and made possible in part by an Institute of Museum and Library Services grant.
