Action and comedy — two things that will never let me down when I take a trip to the theater.
“Fast and Furious Presents: Hobbs and Shaw” came out Aug. 2 and features Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham, Idris Elba, Vanessa Kirby and Cliff Curtis. It was directed by David Leitch and written by Chris Morgan.
This movie pairs together two gentlemen named Luke Hobbs and Deckard Shaw who must save the world from Brixton. They find out how hard it can be to work together as they set aside their differences for the good of mankind.
I came into this movie with very little expectations. I feel like this has been a summer of big blockbusters and movies that carry a lot of weight and reputations. I looked forward to seeing something that I wasn’t super emotionally involved in.
I wanted to be entertained, simple as that, and I did get entertained because this was one of my favorite movies of the summer. It was really good and I had a total blast with it.
This is one of those movies that is kind of dumb, but it knows it is. There is so much action and fist-to-fist fighting, lots of bombastic dialogue and plenty of jokes. I know this movie won’t win an Oscar for best writing or best acting, but it didn’t have to be like that. It just needed to be fun.
There was a nice flow to this film. Everything was set up nicely and it moved from scene to scene with ease. I was never bored or waiting for the next action set piece. It takes its time to set up the next big explosion or fight scene.
There are at least two white-knuckle scenes which are so fun to see. These scenes involve helicopters and cars and explosions and some great writing. They were the highlight of the movie. Johnson, Statham and Elba all delivered in these sequences.
And talk about the acting. Johnson and Statham are really entertaining to see together. They understand their roles and played off one another beautifully. Even though they don’t like each other throughout the movie, they work well together.
They were the reason this movie succeeded for me. The two of them can steal any scene and I was laughing throughout most of the movie.
Elba is good, too. I liked him as the villain and bought that he was a threat. Kirby gave a good performance as well and I liked her interaction with the guys.
Another part that surprised me is some of the themes. There is a big sense of family in this movie which was refreshing to see and I thought it added another element to these characters.
As far as negatives go, I don’t really have any. This movie was exactly what I thought it would be and it delivered on that and more. I had a total blast watching this.
“Fast and Furious Presents: Hobbs and Shaw” is a fun, action-packed comedy that had me entertained and laughing all the way through.
