Rapids’ mill’s permanent closure would have deep impacts across region

So far, rumors of a sale, but no hint of action from Evers

The closure of paper mills in Wisconsin Rapids and Duluth, Minnesota, announced in June by Verso Corporation, will have far-reaching and long-term economic impacts not just in those two cities but across northern Wisconsin if the mills stay closed for long, industry officials and analysts are saying.

The impact could be especially egregious in counties that have significant paper and pulp industries, such as Oneida County. The two mills are scheduled to close by the end of July.
