‘The Art of Poetry’ workshop at Minocqua Library on Oct. 19
October 18, 2019
The Minocqua Public Library, in partnership with the Wisconsin Fellowship of Poets (WFOP), will host “The Art of Poetry: a Workshop Inspired by Art” from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Oct. 19.
This two-part event features poets Jan Bosman and Kathleen Serley, both members of WFOP, and local accomplished artists Christine Alfery and Jillayne Waite. The poets will discuss ekphrastic poetry, defined as, poetry inspired by art. They will offer various writing prompts to encourage participants in the process of writing.
The artists, Christine Alfery, an educator who holds an MFA PhD from UW-Madison and whose exhibitions have garnered numerous honors, as well as Jillayne Waite, a sculptor who allows the clay to speak to her and focuses on color and whimsy, will be in attendance and will provide works from their galleries for inspiration.
In addition to the workshop there will be a sneak peek into “The 2020 Wisconsin Poets’ Calendar, Going Places: Near and Far,” an annual publication featuring Wisconsin poets from around the state. The launch of the 2020 calendar is funded in part by the Green Bay Packers Foundation with an aim to include the public in pursuit of the arts.
“Our overall aim for this library event is to have participants learn a bit about poetry, listen to a little poetry (some excellent calendar poets will read), then read their own poetry in the open mic,” Northwest Region of the WI Fellowship of Poets vice president Nancy Austin said.
This event is free, open to the public and all writing levels are welcome. For more information, call the library at 715-356-4437.
