Turtle River Pursuit on Feb. 15-16

February 11, 2020

The Turtle River Pursuit Cross Country Ski event is scheduled for the weekend of Feb. 15 and 16, at MECCA Trails in Mercer. The cross country skiing community suggested the Club add a shorter community race for recreational skiers, families, and kids, so the Claire d’Loon 5K Classic Tour will be held on Saturday, Feb. 15, following the first leg of the Pursuit Race.
The Claire d’ Loon 5K Classic Tour, designed by trail boss Gary Mears, is routed through MECCA Trails’ forests with both start and finish lines at the MECCA chalet. Racers are timed and awards will be given to the first, second, and third place male and female racers.
Registration for both the 5K Classic Tour and the Pursuit is available online and on paper at TurtleRiverPursuit.com. The cost for the 5K is $30 for adults and $15 for skiers 15 and under. The fee for the Pursuit is $60 for individuals, $30 for students, $100 for teams, and $50 for student teams.
The two-day Pursuit race combines cross-country skiing techniques, classic and freestyle, into one combined timed event. The first leg of the Pursuit, an 11K classic race, will be on Saturday. The second leg, an 11K freestyle race, is on Sunday. Saturday’s results determine the skier’s starting time on Sunday, the first skier across the line on Sunday is the overall winner. Awards will be given to the top three male and female individuals, as well as the top three teams. Age-group winners will also receive awards.
The Turtle River Pursuit is presented by MECCA Ski Club in collaboration with the Gogebic Range Health Foundation as a fundraising event. Proceeds will be used for trail enhancement and expansion, as well as community outreach programs.
