Land O’ Lakes Arts (LOLA) has three upcoming classes for those who love pens and pencils, including “Introduction to Journaling” with writer Adrienne Jaeger, “Playing with Color using Inktense Pencils” with artist Toni Bergeon, and a “Colored Pencil Workshop — Radiant Swan” with artist Andria Burchett.
Introduction to Journaling
In Adrienne Jaeger’s “Introduction to Journaling” class, participants will learn about the benefits of journaling for self-reflection, stress relief, personal processing, and creativity. Students will engage in writing exercises, prompts, and learn techniques to develop and expand their own personal journaling practice. Students will then personalize their own journals using mixed media and collage techniques. All materials, including journals, will be provided. Jaeger holds an M.F.A. in poetry from the University of Southern Maine-Stonecoast and B.A. in English with an emphasis in creative writing from St. Norbert College.
Class will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, July 18, at the LOLA Center. Cost of class is $55 for adults and teens 13 and up. Deadline for registration is July 11.
Playing with Color using Inktense Pencils
Explore the vibrant and saturated color of Derwent Inktense Pencils in Toni Bergeon’s class, “Playing with Color.” Students will create designs on paper and fabric with pencils used both wet and dry. Learn to blend, keep colors contained, use an outliner and add details. The rich colors can enhance commercial fabrics, add shadows and shading to quilts, or bring any artwork to life.
Bergeon is a self-taught, award-winning quilter who studies annually with nationally known fiber artists. She also teaches a variety of workshops and exhibits regularly.
Class will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Tuesday, July 28, at the LOLA Center. Cost of class is $30 (all materials supplied) for adults and children 12 and up. Deadline for registration is July 21.
Colored Pencil Workshop — Radiant Swan
Artist Andria Burchett will teach a two-day colored pencil workshop — “Radiant Swan.” In this workshop, students will explore how to break down and balance the prism of color to allow subjects to glow. To create a lustrous white, an artist must do more than just leave the paper surface free of color. With careful attention to technique, this workshop is designed for both experienced artists, as well as those who are just “dipping their toe in the water” of colored pencil art.
Burchett is a signature member of the Colored Pencil Society of America, a certified SOAR instructor and actively involved in Encore! Mt. Morris, a community development initiative through the arts.
Class will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday, July 31, and Saturday, Aug. 1, at the LOLA Center. Cost of class is $225 for adults. See the LOLA website for supply list. Deadline for registration is July 19.
LOLA will make every effort to keep students and teachers safe during classes. Social distancing, hand washing and sanitizing procedures must be followed. Each student will have their own table and workspace. The CDC strongly recommends and encourages visitors to wear their own protective face mask and/or gloves.
