‘Loon Paddle — Iconic Birds of the North’ on July 17

July 14, 2020

The 2020 Outdoor Adventure Program at Nicolet College features more than 30 different offerings that include a broad range of outdoor experiences and learning opportunities.

From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday, July 17, Jeff Wilson and Dan Clausen will lead the “Loon Paddle — Iconic Birds of the North” class at the Turtle-Flambeau Flowage in Lac du Flambeau.

For years Wilson has been the go-to consulting biologist for state and federal scientists conducting any number of loon research projects of the Turtle-Flambeau, famous for having the most pairs of nesting loons in the state. Wilson leads this paddling tour of the flowage and shares his vast knowledge of these iconic, defining birds of the north.

A gifted storyteller, Wilson will share his expertise on loon behavior and communication patterns, preferred habitat, brood rearing, and the role loons play in being an environmental indicator species. At 14,000 acres complete with 195 islands, the scenic Turtle-Flambeau also has rich populations of bald eagles and osprey and is home to terns, merlins, great blue herons, and a diversity of waterfowl and songbirds.

The cost to participate in this class is $65, or $90 with a canoe or kayak rental. This class is rated some physically demanding aspects, requires some endurance.

Nicolet is following local, state, and federal guidance in regards to COVID-19. A maximum of 10 people, including instructors, are allowed for each class. Any classes that have an indoor component have been moved to larger classrooms to accommodate at least six feet of physical distancing.

Participants are encouraged to bring their own cloth face coverings and hand sanitizer. The college will also have masks and sanitizer available for those who do not have their own. All participants are strongly encouraged to wear face coverings when in indoor settings and when practicable when outdoors.
