‘Primitive Fire Starting’ on July 24

The 2020 Outdoor Adventure Program at Nicolet College features more than 30 different offerings that include a broad range of outdoor experiences and learning opportunities.

From 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, July 24, Andrew Warner will lead the “Primitive Fire Starting” class at The Point, Nicolet College in Rhinelander.

By learning the ancient bushcraft skill of primitive fire starting, quickly and effectively make a fire in any weather condition. Various materials for preparing the best tinder will be covered, as well as the proper technique and equipment used for ferrocerium rod flint and steel fire starting. Everyone will receive a ferrocerium rod flint with striker to keep. Those with thier own rod flint, or survival knife are encouraged to bring that as well. 

The cost to participate in this class is $35. This class is rated not strenuous, most likely a stationary experience.

Nicolet is following local, state, and federal guidance in regards to COVID-19. A maximum of 10 people, including instructors, are allowed for each class. Any classes that have an indoor component have been moved to larger classrooms to accommodate at least six feet of physical distancing.

Participants are encouraged to bring their own cloth face coverings and hand sanitizer. The college will also have masks and sanitizer available for those who do not have their own. All participants are strongly encouraged to wear face coverings when in indoor settings and when practicable when outdoors.
